A great deal of theoretical Kinky Kate research in linguistics is devoted to find­ing ways of accounting for the same facts with fewer more powerful statements, particularly with discovering significant generalizations. Much of the discussion about the form, nature and order of rules in modern grammar centres round this problem. The models of grammar which we are now going to examine achieve quite different degrees of adequacy and power. I choose them because they all are, or have been, candidates for application to language teaching.

The phonological structure of language, however, is not just a hierarchical organization of phonemes and'sequences of phonemes, such as syllables, in 'higher' units. These higher units also have dis­tinctive properties in their own right. To revert to our previous example, the sequence of syllables con+ tract form two different units contract and contract, representing different stress patterns.
