The particular model outlined above is called a `case grammar' and it is transformational in principle since it does attempt to relate the underlying 'notions' or 'case categories' to surface structure. It has not, however, reached the degree of observational adequacy of the classic syntax-basedtransformational model. Grammars of this sort present very great problems of 'adequate formalization'. Making a descriptively adequate grammar of a language is an art. It involves hunches, insights and technical skills. It cannot be reduced to rules of thumb, or a set of automatic procedures.

Enough has been said in the previous section to give an idea of some of the procedures involved: the discovery of the distinctive features of sounds, the establishment of the relevant descriptive units in phonology, in syntax .
